Post time for the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown, is set for 6:46 on Saturday, May 6. Precise speed measurements are, of course, crucial in horse racing: at a thoroughbred’s typical top speed of 70 kilometers per hour, 1/100th second equals 20 centimeters in length — in other words, a narrow margin of victory at the finish line.
